This is the very first step of the ICSI process. Transvaginal Aspiration, the process of aspirating follicles to get oocytes. Before a mare ovulates, she will have a build up of follicles on her ovaries. When the mare has a significant cohort of follicles, this is the best time to aspirate her to retrieve the highest amount of oocytes possible. Once the follicles have been aspirated from both ovaries, the recovered media is then searched through to retrieve each oocyte. This is done in order to start the ICSI process.
The significance of this is that we can create embryos with less time off for the mare to be bred and flushed, letting her get back to training and performing as quickly as possible.
